We all want to feed our families healthy and nutritious meals. In the ideal world, we’d spend hours sourcing fresh ingredients and cooking wholesome meals from scratch. In this dream world, our kids would then eat every mouthful of the meal that we’d loving prepared. Unfortunately, not many of us live in this dream world. While we know that a balanced diet is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle and that eating as a family has countless benefits for us and our children, it’s hard. 


Many parents are juggling work around their family commitments, while also trying to keep the house tidy, socialize and enjoy some time of their own. As much as we might love to cook, there’s rarely enough time in our hectic schedules for us to be in the kitchen as much as we would like. But that doesn’t mean that your family can’t eat well. Here are some tips to help you to feed your family in a hurry. 

Meal Plan

Meal planning is a wonderful tool. It can save you money as well as time and makes shopping much easier. When it comes to feeding your family in a hurry, meal planning helps you to prepare. You’ll never get home to find yourself faced with a hungry family and no idea what to feed them. You know what you are eating every day, you can prepare when you’ve got the time and give yourself a head start. Spend ten minutes every week planning the meals for the following week. Use this plan to help you prepare a shopping list, and then stick it up somewhere in the kitchen, for reference later on. 

Cook in Bulk

It doesn’t take too much longer to cook eight portions of a meal instead of four. But, then you can freeze the extras for a quick meal on another occasion. Whenever you cook something that can be made in big batches, like casseroles, soups, stews, and pasta sauces, make as much as you can and freeze leftovers in portions for a quick meal on a day when you are short on time. 

Make the Most of Your Freezer

Freezing extras isn’t the only way to utilize your freezer to help you to save time in the kitchen. It can also be a good idea to have some healthy frozen Mexican dinners to hand and using frozen veg, herbs and other ingredients can speed things up massively. 

Treats are Ok

Frozen ready meals are ok sometimes. So are takeaways and frozen chip nights. Try to feed your family fresh homemade and healthy food when you can. But, less healthy options won’t hurt occasionally as long as they are part of a healthy and balanced diet. 

Have Healthy Snacks to Hand


Do your kids come home from school absolutely starving? Most of them do, no matter how much they have eaten. You might not have time to make healthy snacks every day, so keep some to hand. Have chopped fruit and veg sticks in the fridge to hand. Check out some other healthy snacks for ideas.
